Since guro is the most complex thing to draw or make in 3d I think it will be not easy for AI either which is still struggling to draw correct number of legs on the character.
Also the whole point of guro is very strange and unique rare content which makes it next to impossible to produce for AI because AI cannot produce new unusual things just variations of old stuff.

Then how can we avoid guro art becoming extinct since many pics have disappeared when sites go down and many artists left (some without a word, others due to the lure of other types, others because they found religion) ?

You mean that religious artist who recently fund a guro hating girlfriend :)?

I think the main reason for it disappearing is that people are not showing their interest. Vanila artists receive far more popularity and comments for their works while if you do guro you rather receive complains even from other people who like guro because the have different interests.
If you want it to stay alive for longer you need to tell those artists that their work is interesting to at least someone.
Like for example 442b on pixiv is doing very good work, but even entire 20 page manga receives juts very few comments while some valila artist who just throws single picture of the cute girl gets few times more.

Throw your favorite artists a bone and commission them, instead of relying on some crackpot AI made by geekass MIT students.

regardless of their budget, people should just learn that if you browse someone pictures or read stories you write some comments. That costs nothing.

Stable Diffusion Model training (which I am guessing is what you mean when you say AI and not like a GPT3 chat bot that wants to be chopped up) takes 2 things an extensively tagged data set ( like a Boorou) and loads of calculations. Like a LOT of calculations. LIKE A LOT A LOT. As in yiffy-e18 cost $3000 worth of server time to make and that's why if you want to use the tag Explicit you have to misspell it "explict" because they were too far in to change anything.

I don't know about my more open-minded and talented colleagues, but the meer possibility of this happening is enough to make me want to stop uploading altogether, holy shit.

You may be overestimating the abilities of AI or underestimating value of your own art if you think that AI can do better or way overestimating value of your art for AI training LOL

totally possible. i've been playing around with AI assisted guro images using daz3d to create a base + stable diffusion to paint over it. everything is still wonky looking, but with a properly trained model this could be done with today's tech.

One thing which I think could be worth doing is to train embedding model on scars wounds and blood content I think using real life images for that woud be most effective as there are not much fictional content
this woud be very useful for AI inpainting when editing 3d or 2d images.
